Try to:
1. ifconfig wlan0 down (or whatever interface name is)  and then fire " iw
dev wlan0 blah blah" , it works ok for me.

2.It could be a driver issue, which driver are you using?try to compile and
install latest  compat-wireless...and have a look on
http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download#Drivers and see if your wifi
hardware is supported.
