rate control in ad-hoc or mesh mode ?

Hello.

I have an experience which rate control does not work in ad-hoc mode. It was
little old environment. -  Linux 2.4.33 , madwifi 0.9.4, AR5212. After I set
"iwconfig ath0 rate auto" or "iwconfig ath0 rate 12M" under ad hoc mode, I
captured packets with OmniPeek. Captured packets were all 54.0 Data rate.

I wonder if current mesh implement supports rate control under ad hoc mode
or mesh mode. 
Is it working to set "iwconfig mesh rate auto" ?  
If it is, there are many next hops which are located in different distance.
Data rate should be changed per each next hop. Is it possible?
