Interesting.  This seems like a different problem to me (but one that
I haven't seen).  I've mostly been using b43 and ath5k cards now.

Do you have any measurements with b43 in STA mode versus, say, one-hop
mesh?  I'm not too familiar with the b43 driver but perhaps the
problem is worth reporting to Johannes Berg or others on the
linux-wireless mailing list (with more detail).  You can also try
ath5k if you have any of those around.
