I don't think that's true,
at least for madwifi-ng.
Only ath5k uses mac80211 for the atheros chipsets.
madwifi-ng uses the net80211 802.11 stack

Can anyone confirm which drivers are working for o80211s?
I didn't think all of the mac80211 supported ones can.
